LOS ANGELES - Artist Community for Change Los Angeles (ACFCLA) presents a spectacular celebration of cultures around the world in their summer concert event “It Takes A Village” at The Barnsdall Gallery Theatre – a facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs on Saturday, July 25, 2009. ACFCLA is a non-profit organization of artists dedicated to using their individual artistic expression to influence and inspire others in a positive way on global, environmental and humanitarian causes. Readymade Film Fest is now taking submissions

The 8th annual Readymade Film Fest is currently taking submissions for this summer's festivals!

The Readymade Film Fest returns this summer with more films for your viewing pleasure. This year's festival will be hosted by LA's newest art gallery; The Federal Art Project. RMFF co-founder George Gomez explains that "FAP is the perfect home for the Readymade Film Fest. Its producers and the art are right there along side with what RMFF stands for and what we try to achieve every year. If you have not been to FAP yet, be prepared to enter an new gem in downtown LA."

Continuing with the success of last year, RMFF will also be doing both Coast to Coast screenings happening in Los Angeles, CA and Washignton D.C. Both screenings will showcase the same film line up.

RMFF is looking for provocative films that are both artistic and philosophical and embrace digital filmmaking without sacrificing the content of the work. RMFF is accepting fiction shorts, animation, documentaries and unique music videos with a storyline (no band shots). There is no cost to submit your film. So don't wait, submit your film today!

~ Discussion, practice,hands-on learning
- Team teaching with Aubre & Deb, therefore dual perspectives on material.
~Skills, practices, and embodied awareness to take your dancing to the next level
~Injury prevention and rehabilitation of common bellydance injuries.

This workshop weekend will assist you in radically shifting bellydance posture and technique, and freeing up new movement pathways to support healthy, embodied dancers. We will discuss injury prevention and self-care; learn ways of protecting overused areas in bellydance--such as psoas, low back, and hips--, and deepen our practices to stretch, strengthen, and activate the body in preparation for bellydance. A great foundation for any level dancer, of any style bellydance. And a necessary addition for Teachers in their tool kit of how to break down and explain safe, proper technique and give one-on-one student feedback and attention to detail.

Come develop a more connected conversation with your own body. Increase body awareness, core stabilization, and presence in movement, taking your dance to the next level, from amateur to artist.
All material will be directly applied to bellydance movement.

Free up the Neck/head, Shoulders, Spine, & Sidebody to create that intoxicating look and feel of ridiculously slow, slinky bellydance; allow for sharper isolations; and create more fluid, articulated movements from the head to the fingertips. Focus will be on the importance and biomechanics of the shoulder girdle, and how it relates to –well--everything you do in bellydance. This module will include lecture, experiential anatomy, and therapeutic yoga/somatic practice, with hands-on adjustments. All material will then be applied to bellydance posture, technique, and combos, with particular focus on arms, core, and ribcage.

New drum circle gathering - antelope valley

We have a limited number of instruments to provide for you to join us in making music.

We're posting this to find other drummers/belly dancers in the Antelop Valley.

LOS ANGELES- Legendary musician Tom Waits toured recently, but fans in his old hometown were out of luck--all the dates were in the South. So Esotouric, the bus adventure company whose offbeat tours expose LA's secret history, launched a new tour just to scratch that gravelly voiced itch.

CRAWLING DOWN CAHUENGA: TOM WAITS' LOS ANGELES debuted in August 2008 with a sold out tour, and repeats on February 28. It is the definitive tour of Tom Waits' formative creative life and the people, places and late night pastries that shaped it.

Calling all rain dogs, gin-soaked boys and Gun Street girls! Climb aboard as your hosts David Smay (author of the new 33 1/3 series book on "Swordfishtrombones") and Esotouric's Kim Cooper (a Zoetrope Studios intern who'll tell how she used teenage subterfuge to arrange a private concert by Tom) lead you on a scrupulously researched ride through Tom's epic misdeeds and shenanigans, from the Trashing of the Troubadour to epic nights at the Tropicana.

And oh, there are such tales to tell, from food fights with L.A. Punks and smackdowns with L.A. Police. We'll crawl through the Sewers of Paris, tattle on the Ivar Theater, and get the lowdown on Tom's legendary performances at the Wiltern and elsewhere. Before departing for points rural, Tom left his mark all over L.A., from Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Studios to Sunset Sound to Skid Row. We'll show you where Tom found his true love and collaborator, Kathleen Brennan, and how all the pieces came together to transform a drunken, desperate singer into the multi-faceted, multi-media artist he'd become.

Raised near San Diego, Tom Waits launched his musical career in L.A., signing with David Geffen's Asylum Records in 1972, living at the raunchy Tropicana Hotel (where he sawed off the kitchen drain board so his piano would fit), and building a reputation as a songwriter willing to risk his own health and sanity to get inside the sad sack characters that peopled songs like "The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me)," "On The Nickel" and "Pasties And A G-string (At The Two O'clock Club)."

By 1980, Tom was 31 and starting to feel the effects of his hard living. While scoring the music to Francis Ford Coppola's "One From The Heart," he met Kathleen Brennan, whose influence would completely transform his life and his art. After a whirlwind courtship the pair married and began a 28-year creative and personal partnership, beginning with the revolutionary album "Swordfishtrombones," the subject of tour host David Smay's new book.

As a symbolic passage from lonesome bar hopping to family joys and sobriety, the tour starts and ends at two important downtown sites. Passengers gather in the King Edward Saloon, the last surviving Skid Row bar with the Christmas 2007 loss of Craby Joe's, before boarding Esotouric's luxury coach class bus, where the mood is set with vintage photos and live footage. CRAWLING DOWN CAHUENGA spans Tom's personal city, from The Nickel (aka Skid Row) to once-ratty West Hollywood, favorite strip clubs and midnight diners, recording studios, night clubs, record labels and film studios, before rolling back downtown for a communal snack at Clifton's Cafeteria.

ABOUT THE HOSTS: Longtime collaborators David Smay and Kim Cooper co-edited the books "Bubblegum Music is the Naked Truth" ("quite simply the most fun music book I have ever read." -Bucketfull of Brains) and "Lost in the Grooves: Scram's Capricious Guide to the Music You Missed" ("the perfect book for the advanced record collector" -Ear Candy) before penning their solo 33 1/3 series books on Tom Waits and Neutral Milk Hotel. All exotic animals on our planet are under threat of extinction because of loss of habitat due to pollution, global warming, and human population growth. Fragile ecosystems are in serious peril all over the world and will pay a heavy price from the increased storms, floods, and coastal erosion that global warming will produce.

So, who are the critters that will survive the coming catastrophe? They will be the ones that are able to live with or near humans, can live in an urban or semi-urban environment, and use human garbage as a food source. These are the "Animals of the Future". They include raccoons, opossums, rats, roaches, crows, coyotes, squirrels, sparrows, pigeons, deer, seagulls, lizards, rabbits, skunk, chipmunks, mice, feral cats, stray dogs, and many other species.

The pieces in this show will highlight and tribute these overlooked noble survivors that live sometimes literally in our own backyards. The pieces are sculptural in nature and are made out of mostly recycled elements but also include exotic materials, and lighting.

Together, Mikey and Gelly both launched the self-coined "HAWT Movement" in February of 2006 in Los Angeles, California. Best friends united by their relentless passion for music, they set out to change the way that people looked at house music, parties, and just having fun in general. "At first we just wanted to start a record label in order to showcase our own music, meanwhile having the opportunity to sign our favorite artists that we admire", says Mikey. "Along with that came the party, and that's what really put us on the map and opened up doors to gradually build relationships that will forever change our lives".

In May of 2006, HAWT Afterhours was born. On every 1st and 3rd Friday since the inception, HAWT's underground parties have not only showcased the DJ talent of various quality acts from all over the world, such as Inland Knights, Justin Long, Johnny Fiasco and many more, but they have also displayed the talent of so many of the great DJ's in the local scene. In the beginning there was Jack...or so the story goes.
Jack "Freedom" Monforte has been spinning for over two decades now.
An underground fixture since the late eighties, he joined forces with two other promoters
in the early nineties to create Sweet Sundays.
Shortly thereafter he moved to Alaska, where he saw an opportunity to bring the underground techno scene to virgin territory, today Jack is considered one of the pioneers of the Alaskan electronic scene.

The Nova Express Cafe has existed to make the claim that a unique artistic cafe is an important part of the cultural ecology of the modern urban landscape. Essentially, Nova Express Cafe is an art project designed to explore the parameters of how a kind of art, based on the importance of community and generally motivated by an idea of fun, can function in society. However, The Nova Express Cafe has existed outside the normal channels of either capital investment or art world patronage and now faces severe economic difficulties. The cafe will be closing Wednesday, March 5. The last fifteen years have been a great romantic adventure! Thanks and goodbye!

LA City Voters - Vote “NO” on Prop S – It’s Really a Tax Hike

On election day, this coming Tuesday, February 5th, you will not only be able to vote in the presidential primary, but you will also have an opportunity to vote on certain ballot issues. If you live in the City of Los Angeles, one of the ballot issues is Proposition S, and I urge you to vote NO. This ballot proposal is deceptively billed as a tax reduction, but in reality would expand taxes on telecommunication services and open the door to taxing of your internet services. Don’t let the politicians get away with this deception. It is critical that this proposition be defeated, so please vote NO and email this information to everyone who could potentially vote in Los Angeles. We need your help to get the word out. Please take a moment to read and another few moments to act. YOU can make a difference.

Here’s the Facts

1. Prop S would RAISE your taxes, not lower them.
Prop S would ratify tax hikes City Hall made illegally in the past. City Hall adopted certain taxes on cell phones and land lines without voters' approval, which is illegal under our state constitution and which has been struck down by two court decisions. If Prop S passes, those taxes would stay in force, and would drop from 10% to 9% -- but if Prop S fails, those taxes would disappear altogether, so they would go from 10% to ZERO percent. When coming up with the plan to have voters validate their illegal tax hike through Prop S, Mayor Villaraigosa persuaded council members to seek a 9% tax - just so they could bill it as a tax cut. That's what's so sneaky about Prop S!

Prop S would also impose a BRAND NEW TAX on DSL, wireless, text-messaging, instant-messaging, VoIP and other "new" communications services. The new tax could cover everything from a land-line telephone call to a photograph sent from a cell-phone camera to a text message sent via BlackBerry. And, it’s possible that if Prop S is approved, in the future, the city could impose other taxes on your basic internet access without getting any voter approval.

2. Prop S is unfair.
Prop S would tax YOU at 9%, but telemarketers would pay only 5%. Plus, the L.A. Times and other newspapers and radio stations would pay NO tax on cellular, wireless and internet services.

3. Prop S is unnecessary.
Despite the scare tactics, you can be sure that essential services won’t be cut if Prop S fails. Mayor Villaraigosa has repeatedly said he would protect the Los Angeles Police Department from cuts and press on with the goal of adding 1,000 officers by 2010.
Furthermore, the City of L.A. has higher taxes than any city in the county, and already takes in more revenues than ever in its history: $6.7 billion per year. Even if we repealed all cell phone and land line taxes, and hired 1,000 new police officers, the city's tax revenues would still be 21% higher than they were in 2004-05.

Meanwhile, City Hall wastes YOUR tax money on hundreds of millions of dollars per year on subsidies to downtown developers and on other wasteful spending. For example,
there are only 15 City Council members, but 108 city owned and paid-for cars assigned to those council members' offices. That’s over 7 cars per council member. In addition, $66 million in taxpayer subsidies will go to the out-of-state developers of the Grand Avenue luxury shopping and hotel project downtown and $270 million in tax breaks — the very amount city officials cite as the upcoming budget shortfall — is going to AEG, which developed the ritzy L.A. Live entertainment venue downtown. These are just a few examples of how LA government wastes your tax dollars. So why should you pay higher taxes while the special interests get perks and big tax breaks?
And to add insult to injury, the City is squandering $5.1 million to put Prop S on the ballot as a special election when they could have saved that money and just added Prop S to the next regular municipal election. But that’s not until April of 2009. Apparently, the City Council just can’t wait to get its hands on your hard earned dollars.
Other cities thrive with no phone taxes. Did you know that Beverly Hills, Thousand Oaks and San Diego have no phone tax? The same goes for Atlanta, Boston, and Philadelphia. As for cities that do impose phone taxes, New York’s tax is just 2.4%; Long Beach and Las Vegas charge 5%; and Burbank and Portland charge 7%. So why must we pay 9%?
Prop S is a big rip-off. Vote no, and PLEASE email everyone you know who lives in Los Angeles and tell them to do the same. The special interests behind Prop S have put up $2.3 million for a misleading advertising campaign. We taxpayers, by contrast, have to let one another know. We need to get the word out or the deceptive title and wording of Prop S will probably lead many uninformed voters to vote yes and that means higher taxes for us all.

Sunday: Unveiling New Art @ the Montrose Farmer's Market

This coming weekend’s shaping up to be gorgeous – clear and sunny and in the mid 60’s. It’s been beautiful in Montrose; the surrounding hills are green, the sky is brilliant blue, the plants are lush from the recent rain - perfect for a leisurely outdoor stroll at our charming local Sunday Farmer’s Market, where I’ll be showing and selling my newest artwork; colorful little original mosaic collages made from recycled packaging materials, prints of new digital art and my greeting cards.
I’ve specially designed these smaller works to be beautiful and affordable, and I’ve been working hard on them, but enjoying every minute!
The Farmer’s Market is on Sundays from 9am to 2pm, and includes a selection of delicious locally-grown produce, beautiful plants, jewelry, art, flea market bargains and other unique treasures as well as yummy homemade tamales, hummus and breads, Salvadorian cuisine and fresh roasted peanuts, just to name a few!

Call for artist/performers for show on October 20th

I'm creating an interactive performance work for the evening of October 20th in Silverlake in the evening. I'm seeking cultivators of light interested in exploring a space filled with people from a center filled with love. It will be about a 10 minute improvisation with movement, vocals, connections and whatever is called for in the present moment. No one needs to "know how to perform" to be a part of my little experiment because we all are performing at every moment of everyday. This piece is an opportunity to reach out to people you have never met before and possibly have an impact on their lives (and yours) you could never expect or know. Please feel free to contact me if you want to take part or want further information about what I'm thinking for the piece. I will be holding no rehearsals for this piece. Just asking whoever commits to show up the night of the show. If you can or are interested please let me know by this Friday October 5th. Photo art show with kids from Oakwood/Venice needs some artist to help

Many of you already know me. I am Kengi. Right now I am teaming up with my sisters foundation (The Mildred Cursh Foundation) to put together a photo art show with kids from the Oakwood/Venice area. I am meeting with photographers who will work with the kids this week. I am still looking for at least 6 more photographers. You don’t have to be a pro, just love to work with kids.

I am also looking for creative people to help me design the overall look and feel of the show. If anyone here would like to volunteer their time and talent to help me pull this show off I would really appreciate it..

The children I am going to be working with for this show are pretty special kids. Most of them have parents who are in prison. So for them to be able to put on a great show would be awesome. It would help to build their self esteem and help with their overall growth.
The show is designed to allow the kids to express themselves through photography. I am hoping to find people right here from the Venice area who would love to make this happen.

Ninja Skillz really wanted to throw a post-election party in an effort to try to get out the vote today (offering a free drink w/ ballot stubs). Democracy should be fun! We're doing a whole politically themed event with DJs as political candidates and patriotic campaign decor. It's going to be all tag-team DJ sets (debates) and we have grabbed some of our DJ friends that aren't usually heard in our circles (to give a voice to the underrepresented!)

This call goes out to everybody in Los Angeles. We want your digital photographs of Los Angeles for My L.A. Pic project to be included in the upcoming exhibit L.A. 225 which will be held at the Pico House Gallery to commemorate the 225th birthday of Los Angeles in September of 2006.

The objective of My L.A. Pic is to create a digital photographic presentation of Los Angeles’ neighborhoods as seen through the eyes of the people who live there. Show your side of L.A. that people wouldn’t normally see. You do not have to be an artist or photographer to participate.

There is NO entry fee and the youth are encouraged to participate. We also encourage Los Angeles organizations to share this information with their members. Photographs selected to be included in the exhibit are the sole discretion of the project’s organizers.
Photo Submission Guidelines

Number of Submissions Accepted: Each person may submit one digital photograph which must have been taken within the city of Los Angeles.

The following information must be included in the submission:

1-Where was the photo shot? Use nearest intersection. Example: Wilshire & Western.

2-When was the photo taken? Example: Aug.1.2006

3-What is the photographer’s first and last name?

4- What is the photographer’s age? Example: Age: 22

All photos must be:

Corman began his career in 1953 as a producer and screenwriter, and began directing in 1955. He is also the founding Director of the Cetacean Studies Institute, a research and education organisation based in Byron Bay. He was the Director of the Naakal Mystery School in Questa, New Mexico where the Flower of Life teachings were developed in the late 80s and has been a student of the Language of Form for many years. He is a certified Permaculture teacher, having taught at the Santa Fe Community College and other schools.

Amanda, a trained counsellor, is the Director of the Dolphin EDventures Wellness Program in Coff's Harbour, Australia. The Wellness program is designed for adults to be able to have up-close and intimate contact with dolphins in a safe environment. The program offers "non-clinical, self-directed therapy", and has been helping people for over three years.

The Dolphin Embassy has been invited to bring the voice of the dolphins to the United Nations. My friend Andy has organized a charity event on Sunday, July 30th of this year at the Mor bar in Santa Monica. It's basically a groovy dance party and the proceeds will go to My Friend's Place which is an organization that helps homeless youth in Los Angeles. It's afiliated through Burners Without Borders which is a charity initiated by people from the Burning Man community. I volunteered to organize and curate a silent art auction that will take place in one of the rooms at The Mor.

So, what I'm asking is for artists to donate a small piece to be auctioned off at this event. I'm hoping to get 15 to 20 or so small pieces (no bigger than 12"x16"). Imagine a photograph of more than 2,400 Americans strewn across a vast, desiccated expanse of desert. Know War is an ambitious non-profit project that aims to depict the human cost of the Iraq War by transforming the casualty number into a visible reality. This undertaking by renowned photographer, Zach Gold, will create an image that makes death come to life.

Know War intends to raise continued public awareness by enabling people to visually understand the American death toll. There has been overwhelmingly positive response so far, including veterans associations across the country, necessary vendors to execute a project of this size, as well as many individual volunteers. Dialogue has also begun with high-level advertising executives to aid in creating an ongoing public campaign. But Know War needs more help. We seek subjects for the photograph, volunteers to assist in organizing, food vendors, and everyone who stands for an end to this war.

The shoot date for this project is June 3, 2006 from 2pm - 6pm, the location is Mystery Mesa, Santa Clarita, California. Both a 30-second Public Service Announcement and a documentary will be developed in tandem with the photo shoot.

We played with Karsh Kale last summer at a Northern California festival, and it was love at first sight for both parties! Since the release of 2001's classic "Realize", his musical vision has taken him on a non-stop global voyage, playing alongside and working with some of the world's top recording artists and producers including Sting, Zakir Hussein, Bill Laswell, Pharoah Sanders and Herbie Hancock.
